Description
Four silver coins from Guatemala:2 types of 10 centavo & 5 centavo coins
This set includes two silver (0.720 fine) coins minted in the coinage series authorized by the
Ley de 26 de Noviembre de 1924
(Law of 26 of November of 1924).
Both the 10 centavo coin (1945; 20 mm diam; KM 239) and the 5 centavo coin (1945; 16 mm diam; KM 238) feature the same motif on the obverse:
a Quetzal bird perched on a column, along with the denomination (10 centavos, 5 centavos) encircled by the words “
Ley de 26 de Noviembre de 1924
”. The Quetzal is an important Guatemalan national symbol: In addition to being the name of the national currency, it is the “bird of freedom”, so called because it allegedly cannot live in captivity.
The reverse of both coins features the
escudo nacional
(national coat of arms) in which the Quetzal bird appears again, with a scroll bearing the slogan “
LIBERTAD
15 de
Septiembre 1821”
the date of Central American independence from Spain.
Surrounding the
escudo
are the words “
REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA
”
and the year the coin was minted.
Both coins have milled edges.
The remaining two coins are from the coinage series that replaced the 1924 Ley series.
They too are minted of .720 silver and essentially the same size as the older coins.
But they feature new different designs.
The obverse of the 1960 10 centavo coin (KM 262) depicts one of the Maya stelae at the famous archeological site of Quiriguá.
The 1958 5 centavo coin (KM 261) features a ceiba tree with the words “LIBRE, CREZCA, FECUNDO” (“FREE, GROWING, FERTILE”), an historic symbol that goes back to the early 19
th
century when it was a symbol of a nation that struggled to exist for more than a decade, but tore itself apart: the Federation of Central America. The reverse of each coin features the national coat of arms, the mint date, the silver fineness (0.720) and the words REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA.
I am not a numismatist and will not attempt to grade these coins.
You can see in the images that they show some wear.
Winning bidder will receive the very same coins in the images.
