    Description: Presented here is a gorgeous 8 reales minted in Guatemala in 1798. The reverse shows signs of corrosion, possibly saltwater damage, around the rim on the reverse. With brilliant luster, strong strike, and beautiful surfaces, this is a choice specimen. 8 realer such as these evolved from the crude hand struck cobs, to the well milled piece you see here. These Spanish empire silver 8 reales were also the basis for the United States dollar and were accepted as legal tender until 1857.
