1795 SPANISH Colonial GUATEMALA Choice "PIECE of 8 REALES" >Nueva GUATEMALA Mint
    Description
This is a very nice, large, crown size,
    "Piece of Eight"
    or
    "Spanish Milled Dollar"
    or
    "Eight Reals,"
they were called all three, from the
    "Captaincy-General"
    of Spanish
    "Colonial"
Guatemala. It was struck at the Nueva Guatemala mint and dated 1795 during the reign of King Charles IV, who ruled Spain and
    “The Indies”
including Guatemala, from December 24, 1788 until he was forced to abdicate by Napoleon Bonaparte on March 19, 1808.
    These
    "Eight Real"
coins were struck in multiple locations in Spanish America and circulated all over the world. At the time it was struck it was legal tender in, and would have been readily accepted as a Dollar of current money in, the young United States. The U.S. Dollar was based on these coins. The paper Continental Currency had been payable in
    "Spanish Milled Dollars."
    Weight: 26.91 Gram, 40 Millimeter, .903 Silver.

    bust of Charles IV.
Napoleon forced Charles to abdicate to his son Ferdinand. Then he forced Ferdinand to abdicate and placed his own brother, Joseph Bonaparte, on the Spanish Throne. This did not sit well in the colonies and precipitated the Spanish American revolutions.

In 1773, the old Guatemalan capital city of Santiago de los Caballeros, including the mint, was destroyed by a volcanic eruption and earthquake. A new mint and capital city were established in
    "Nueva Guatemala"
city and coin production resumed in late 1776. From then on, they used the NG
    (Nueva Guatemala)
    mint mark.
    The Coin:
A beautiful example from a very scarce mint. It saw mild use and passed through some hands. Totally original, it has not been cleaned and is scarcer and more desirable as such. The Spanish
    "Colonial"
coins from Guatemala are much scarcer than those from Mexico or Peru. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
