Scarce & late Spanish colonial mint Established in the former Viceroyalty of New Spain. After a severe earthquake shook the original capital of Guatemala City to the ground, the city was moved and re-established as Nueva Guatemala in 1775. When production began at the new mint in 1776, the new capital was reflected in a new mintmark "NG"
    (Nuevo Guatemala)
. The first assayer to work at the new mint was the same as in Antigua Guatemala, but was replaced in 1785 by
    M
anuel Eusebio Sanchez, who would be the third assayer to appear on Guatemalan coins, and the last working assayer under Spanish rule until 1821.
This coin grades fine, and was well circulated yet it is surprisingly without any hole or attempt at a piercing - something very common to Guatemala cobs and coins. Like all Guatemalan reales, they have low mintage numbers and are quite scarce in comparison to coins from Mexico and Peru.
